Notice to Mariners – River Ribble

15 September 2026

The Morecambe offshore windfarm development’s onshore export cable is planned to cross the River Ribble approximately 2 km west of Preston on its route from landfall.

This Notice to Mariners is to advise that geotechnical and geophysical surveys (to include an unexploded ordinance [UXO] identification survey) are due to commence from 16 September 2026.

The geophysical and geotechnical surveys will be undertaken across the River Ribble cable crossing site to provide an overview of ground conditions. Geophysical surveys will be also conducted to search for any UXO to reduce the risk of encountering UXO during geotechnical investigations.

The results of these surveys will be used to support the acquisition of geotechnical boreholes.

Once it has been ensured that the risk of UXOs is as low as reasonably practicable, an over-water ground investigation will be undertaken from a Jack-up platform to obtain geological, geotechnical and geo-environmental information required for engineering design. This will be done through the delivery of two geotechnical boreholes scheduled for during the month of October 2026.
