As part of the project’s Transmission Assets, we are proposing to carry out a series of ground investigation surveys, including geophysical surveys and geotechnical boreholes at St Annes North Beach, Lytham St Annes Dunes and St Annes Golf Club.
Why we’re carrying out these surveys
The purpose of these surveys is to collect information about the ground conditions which is an important step in developing the detailed engineering design for the project. The information collected will help inform the design and planning of the proposed export cable crossing at the landfall location. This installation technique will enable the cable to be routed beneath St Annes North Beach, Lytham St Annes Dunes and St Annes Golf Club, helping to minimise disruption to local communities and the surrounding environment during construction.
When the surveys will take place
The surveys are due to start on or shortly after 12 October 2026. Survey activities at St Annes North Beach and Lytham St Annes Dunes are expected to be completed by the end of November 2026, with works at the golf club anticipated to conclude by mid-December 2026. This will include the reinstatement of the ground and the removal of all equipment from site.
The surveys will be undertaken Monday to Friday between the hours of 7am and 7pm. Additionally, some Saturday working may be required to facilitate the transportation of equipment between site locations, and these activities will take place between 7am and 1pm.
Please note that the programme is dependent on weather and ground conditions, and the survey dates may change at short notice.
What to expect
During the survey period, there may be some occasional noise from the survey equipment. This noise is expected to be intermittent and localised, meaning it will be more noticeable closer to the work area and will only occur during the working hours outlined above.
To facilitate deliveries and access to the site, temporary stop/go traffic management will be used at intervals on Clifton Drive North throughout the day. These measures will only be in place during delivery and associated vehicle activities. The traffic management will not be in place every day and will be removed as soon as they are no longer required.
To ensure the safety of both the public and our site team, temporary fencing will be installed around the small work areas. However, all public walking routes across Lytham St Annes Dunes and access to St Annes North Beach will remain open and accessible at all times.
It is important to note that these surveys are not the start of the project’s main construction works.
